COURSE CONTENT

 

 

Course Description: 

Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities in Inquiry Based Math and Science is a follow up to the AIMS Math and Science initiative which increases teachers’ knowledge and skills in inquiry based math and science.  AIMS participants will be offered this opportunity in collaboration with Project ENRICH. Project ENRICH provides teachers the knowledge base to meet the needs of students with disabilities in the regular classroom.

Course Content and Incentives:

  • 10 Hours - online instruction
  • 2 Hours - practical application
  • 3 Hours - reflection and DDN follow-up activity
  • A $150 stipend (funded through the AIMS Project)
  • One Black Hills State University graduate credit

Putting Inquiry-Based Learning in Mathematics and Science into Practice

 

Spring Course

Who: Classroom and pre-service teachers grades K–12 in Regions 6 and 7

What: Participants will put inquiry-based learning into practice in their classrooms through an online learning environment that supports communities of practice, modeling, case studies, and sharing what works and what doesn’t. Online courses with specific math and science content will be offered to cohorts of teachers through TIE’s partnership with Annenberg/CPB Channel’s Free Professional Development.

These courses include 6 to 8 one-hour videos focused on content and pedagogy featuring real teachers, in real classrooms, with real students. An additional 7-8 hours of online group discussions, activities, and other assignments occur prior to and after the video segments lasting approximately 8 weeks for a total of 15 hours of course work.

Individuals should form teams of 2 to 5 individuals geographically convenient for face to face meetings. If you can’t locate a team member, we will help you locate one.

Courses include:

  • Private Universe Project in Math – K-12 (Recommended for individuals with little or no prior knowledge of Inquiry-based learning)
  • Private Universe Project in Science – K-12 (Recommended for individuals with little or no prior knowledge of Inquiry-based learning)
  • Assessment in Math and Science – What’s the Point? – K-12
  • Learning Math: Patterns, Functions, and Algebra – K-8
  • Science in Focus: Force and Motion – K-8
  • Rediscovering Biology: Molecular to Global Perspectives – 9-12

When: January 24 - March 29, 2005.

  • January 24, 2005 - DDN Course Introduction – (DDN sites to be determined by registrations)
  • January 25-March 28 - Each team will meet once a week. The team will determine the time and location. Online bulletin board course-specific forum discussions will be required weekly
  • March 29, 2005 - DDN Course Evaluation – (DDN sites to be determined by registrations)

Where: The location for team face to face meetings will be determined by each team. Online bulletin board discussions are a required part of this course and take place from home or school once a week

  • One Graduate credit will be offered through BHSU for $57.30/credit hour.
  • Upon completion of the course a $150 stipend will be paid to each participant.
  • Online registration - Registration Deadline is January 14, 2005
