Goal:

The AIMS II Math curriculum and professional development initiative is designed to help schools in ESA 6 and 7 in three ways:

  • Teachers will understand students’ mathematical thinking and use their knowledge to improve instruction.
  • Students improve achievement in mathematics.
  • Teams will exhibit:
    • Collaborative behavior.
    • Decision-making skills.
    • Use of data to inform decisions and plans.

Project Design: Year 2- 2006-2007

This project is a two-year extension of the math component of the original AIMS work--with a new twist.  While AIMS focused on individual teacher professional development in inquiry-based math, AIMS II Math will focus on standards-based, technology-rich mathematics curriculum review, selection, implementation and professional development at the school and/or district level.  School-based support and follow-up--customized to the needs of each participating school or district--will take place during the school year. Vertical teams from each participating district will be provided professional development to move through the process and individual teacher professional development will also be provided to support the transition to standards-based inquiry math.

Partners:

ESA Regions 6 and 7, Technology and Innovations in Education (TIE), and the Center for the Advancement of Mathematics and Science Education (CAMSE) at Black Hills State University.

Professional Development:

Professional development will be provided to the vertical teams that choose to be a part of the grant to build their capacity. Individual professional development will be provided to all math teachers in ESA 6 and 7 to build your understanding of inquiry in math and standards-based math curricula. Stipends and substitute pay will be made available for the participating individuals.
